Going on Vacation? Its Burglar Break-in Time!
As the winter holiday season has come to a close, people are preparing for their spring and summer vacations, which are ideal times for burglars to strike on empty homes and apartments across the planet.
Both the apartments and homes people leave behind when they go on vacation, and the vacation homes, or hotels are targets for potential theft. Most alarm systems are not mobile, require professional installation, and have monthly monitoring fees with long-term contracts. Another disadvantage has been the fact that people who rent homes are excluded from the option of setting up an alarm system due to restrictions from the landlords for installation, and contracts alarm companies being restrictive.
With the recent introduction of devices such as the Lasershield system homeowners and renters now have an option to set up an affective alarm system at a very low cost, and easy out of the box installation. In addition, security camera systems were also prohibitive due to the installation of wiring. This has been remedied with the introduction of video over power, which is able to send a video signal from a single or multiple cameras around the home over the power-lines to a source where it is recorded.
Gordon Simpson, a Manhattan-based security consultant told The Guardian, device like the Lasershield and systems working video over power-line is an extremely simple to install yet affective solution for securing a home. “You can spend thousands of dollars and sign a contract to secure your home, but for under a couple of hundred bucks, no contract and a minimal fee you get a security system straight out of a box that you can install in under five minutes,” said Simpson. “If someone breaks into your home the exact same type 24-hour monitoring service picks up the call and contact the authorities and the homeowner,” he added.
An New York City Police Department spokesperson told The Guardian a device like the Lasershield is perfect for people who rent. “The East Village in lower Manhattan is an ideal hunting ground for burglars. Most of the buildings have relatively easy access through fire-escapes, but the major dilemma for people living in this neighborhood is the fact that most of the landlords and the management companies do not allow for the installation of alarm systems.” He added, “A wireless alarm system out of a box is the ideal solution.” If a homeowner, or a renter requires security cameras, video over power-line is an inexpensive and easy to install solution.
Simpson said, “These types of camera systems are great, you take it out of the box, plug the camera into electrical outlets around your home, then hook up the decoder to the outlet that the computer or digital video recorder is near, and bingo, you have a security camera system running over your home’s electrical system.”
The NYPD spokesperson said, “The solutions are simple and they are out there, and if homeowners and renters want to rest easy when they are at work, or on vacation this is definitely solution.”
